The bottom line is that while both are despicable to do to an ally, they aren't really equal. To start with, are you likely to see the former as an immediate threat and try to kill them?

There's a difference between sitting on the sidelines like a vulture letting two people fight it out, and swooping in to try and gain an oppertunistic kill. Yes, but both are equally "condemnable" seeing that they arrive to the same outcome, right? But I don't see there being a serious chance where Ludin did the deed. And particularly in the "attack while the Dredge distracts" scenario, fighting an armored juggernaut is probably the very last time when you want to start backstabbing.Īt most, I could see Ludin holding back when the Dredge did its' work, thinking he could mop up. Ludin is not the world's biggest friend of the Varl at that stage, but he had tolerated them so far. Though I don't see that being too convincing. Or alternatively for Ludin to backstab Vognir while he waas distractged with the Dredge. The main possible answers I could have is if Vognir was distracted and Ludin managed to kill him only for a Dredge to show up later. So I don't see him overcoming Vognir in battle (especially not when the other could probably knock him down in just a few blows). But the fact remains that Ludin still didn't know some of the basics of combat and it showed. Yes, I agree that Varl are less naturally armored than Dredge. He serves as a sacrificial lamb/free shot to the enemy to demonstrate just why slapping away at someone with high armor is a bad idea (something that still makes me groan whenever I have to play through that.).

I mean, Ludin is a *PROFOUNDLY* undertrained, headstrong warrior who couldn't even figure out how to get around armor.

I don't think Ludin would have had the strength or skill to overcome Vognir at the time. Unless Vognir was dramatically weaker than the other Varl we play in early game, I think the answer is probably fairly clear: the Dredge.
